How To Apply Sunless Tanning Lotion

By Haywood Hunter

The market is currently filled with several products that give elegant tanning effects when applied properly. Choosing the right commodity however needs some experience and knowledge about tanning products. To choose a good product, one needs the right information on application procedures, content of the product, and skin type. This article contains information on choosing a good sunless tanning lotion.

Knowing the skin type should be the first thing to do. Human skins can be placed into three major categories, though each type may have sub-divisions. The three types are dark, fair, and medium or olive. Since fair skins burn when subjected to solar radiation, people with type of skin should not use sun beds and the sun. Medium-skinned however can use radiation because their skin tans. Dark skin type however cannot burn, but also it does not tan.

Tanning products fall under five main groups, that is, tingle, bronzers, moisturizers, facial tanners, and accelerators. Each group of products needs varied time frames to give different results. Although they may all attain similar outcomes, the working varies may vary a lot. Skin type should be the consideration when choosing a product because ingredients and their level of concentration differs in various products.

The concentration of a lotion is measured according to the amount of DHA and erythulose it contains. DHA and erythulose are the ones that cause tanning and are the key active ingredients in most lotions. They do this by reacting with amino acid in dead epidermal cells. Low concentration products should be the choice for fair-skinned people because high concentrations also cause burning.

Skin is kept moist and soft by moisturizers in a lotion. Moisturizers should be considered because the moisture helps the skin to tan faster than when the body is dry. Bronzers are also important and they are of two types. The two types are gradual and immediate. Immediate bronzers cause a darkening effect on skin immediately they are applied whereas gradual bronzers need time to build up the tan. The choice between immediate and gradual bronzers should depend on how urgently the tan is required.

Many individuals fear tingle, although it is able to give elegant results when applied in the right way. First, it causes reddening and a great feeling of irritation on the skin. It causes the skin to look horrible while the irritation is very uncomfortable, but when it stops, it leaves behind a beautiful tan. First timers are advised to apply tingle on their first application. Tingle builds the initial tan which can then be sustained through frequent application of other products.

Accelerators are the other essential additives that beginners should consider. Accelerators and maximizers that contain aloe help in slowing the aging process and improve ability of the skin to heal. They also speed up tan formation. A list of all ingredients a lotion contains is printed on the container.

As dead cells making up the epidermal cells slough off, the effect of tanners on the skin fades away too. This happens because tanners only have effect on the outermost skin layer and when the layer gets replaced with new dead cells, the color change fades. To maintain the tan, the lotion needs to be reapplied regularly.
