A professional whose area of expertise involves dietary studies and advising people on healthy feeding is known as a nutritionist. These specialists have deeper understanding of the occurring metabolism after consumption of certain foods. Nutritionists are a very important part of society considering that food is a basic need which a person cannot survive without. As such, the job market for an integrative nutritionist is always full of opportunities.

These professionals study diet depending on their occupation and advise them on what to eat. For example, outdoor workers mostly do laborious jobs that require a lot of energy than those who work indoors in places such as offices. Those who perform laborious jobs need foods rich in carbohydrates. People who are faced with food disorders are those who hardly involve nutritionist in their eating habits.

These professionals perform various duties that may include providing advice on diet and discussing and advising weight management plans. They also help in identifying appropriate eating habits for people of different ages, gender and condition. Another way that nutritionists help patients is by making follow up and generating plans for patients to follow to achieve the set nutritional goal.

Nutritional experts are a type of physician just like a dentist or gynaecologist that should be visited regularly. Strictly adhering to the guidelines provided by the expert can save one from a death warrant. This is because some eating habits are unhealthy and can lead an individual being bed ridden for the rest of their lives. Conditions such as obesity make the body susceptible to other kinds of disease like stroke.

In nutritional medicine, there are other subspecialties that one can venture in. For example there are sports nutritionists who deal with the regulation of the diet of sportsmen and women. This is meant to improve performance in sports as poor performance can often result in the end of a career in sports. It is the responsibility of the nutritionists to caution the athletes against consumption of certain foods such as alcohol.

They are involved in awareness campaign about effects of poor eating. They help patients construct a mental picture of the effects of eating habits like starving or overeating while under medication. They also engage in referral of patients to psychologists if the poor eating habits are related to stress yet they lack the skills to handle such cases.

These professionals study various groups of people in a community and set preferable diets for each group after careful analysis of the data. For example, a nutritionist may decide to focus on lactating mothers and develop appropriate diet fir them. They do this consideration of factors like health, age, weather, and type of birth.

As a nutritionist, one is expected to have a good understanding of all eating disorders and their prevention. This creates a good basis when dealing with a patient as some diseases have similar features and may lead to wrong diagnosis. It is recommended to consult a nutritionist before changing diet.
